  3. Cynde Bean Dickey says:

I adored Peter aka “Pete the Man”. I had the honor and priviledge to work for him at Nordstrom Brea and Nordstrom South Coast Plaza. I made a huge impact in my life back in the Nordstrom days. He was the kind of person I wanted to be. I have often thought of him over the years…and of his smile that lit up an entire store when he would come to work. An Angel of Angels has arrived in heaven…I will remember him with the utmost honor and respect.
”HE made a huge impact in my life”

  4. Doug Sherlock says:

    Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;
Who put their trust in you.

I am Peter’s second cousin, and knew him mostly as a boy when he lived in Baltimore. I met him again briefly when he and Kern came to visit my parents a few years ago. I am astounded at his strength.

    All blessings,

  5. Kathy Ogden says:

First, I would like to send my heartfelt sympathy to your family.
Many of us had the distinct pleasure of Peter as our store manager at Nordstrom South Coast Plaza and will always think of him as “our absolute favorite” boss of all time. What a guy!
    He will be missed.

  6. Tom and Cheryl Hartman says:

We have been keeping up with your family through your awesome website and through my sweet sorority sister, Mary. The last few years have been such a testament to God’s grace and your faith – I know the gospel of Jesus has been shared and spread through your trials; along with the hope and joy that is only possible through Him. May God bless you and your family as you carry on, knowing that Peter is now singing and dancing with Jesus. I loved your Christmas greeting – what a special family you are! You will continue to be in our prayers!

  7. Ann and Rick Lund says:

What an honor it was to know Peter. He was a tremendous example of joy in the midst of great trial and suffering to all of us. His eyes shined like bright stars, giving evidence of his personal relationship with Jesus, which was surely fueling this joy unspeakable.
We will get to see him again someday! I am sure his entrance into heaven was quite a celebration!
Our hearts and prayers will continue for you and your family Andrea. You too have shown amazing grace and courage amid great challenge and sorrow of heart. Your love and commitment has been an inspiration to us personally, and so many more.
Love to you and peace from God passing all understanding.

    Andrea and Family!

I received the message this morning about Peter passing away. What a lovely man! I feel like it was such a privilege know him and to have fished with him for the last time together on the Big Wood River in Sun Valley Idaho. I’m happy to have witnessed him landing his last trout this side of heaven. It now holds new meaning for me. Here’s to the legacy that only a truly good man can leave!

    Hi Peter and family,

I left a note that is probably waaaay too long with your post from Nov. 4, 2012. Then I saw this page, which is probably where I should have left it. Ah well. Yes, I’m a real blast from the past, from Bainbridge Island and Rolling Bay Pres. Church days. I’m keeping you and your family in my prayers. May God’s courage, strength, and joy sustain you these days! Christ’s Hope, Mary Robinson-Mohr

  11. Gene Berg says:

Dear Peter and family, I am writing this for my husband Gene Berg who grew up with Peter. We found this blog via Facebook and have thinking of you today. Gene has been sharing stories from growing up on Manitou Beach with Peter. Mostly of Peter and his friend challenging Gene and his cousin Scott to various athletic endevours in which Peter and friend always “creamed us”. Good memories of growing up in a special place.

  15. Richard Berg says:

    Peter and Andrea,

Thank you so much for graciously hosting me for a visit last week. It meant so much to me to be able to visit with Peter, my best childhood friend, to talk about our lives and families and to reminisce about growing up together on Bainbridge Island. Andrea, I really appreciated the way you sat with us and helped the conversation flow in a way that facilitated Peter’s participation, when it is clearly not an easy thing for him. Peter, I was so happy to find you so engaged, expressive, and present to me in spite of your condition! It was truly a very enjoyable visit for me. I love you and think about you often.

  16. Mary says:

    love you Peter :)

  17. Victoria says:

You both are in my thoughts today.

  19. Victoria says:

Thinking of you guys today….here is what the Lord put on my heart….

    Jeremiah 9:23-24
This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

  24. Aloha Peter,
I wanted to say that one of my fondest recollections with you was on the Pudget Sound, we went water skiing ! I was terrified to fall into the freezing Bainbridge water, so I used 2 ski’s. I think you were trying to teach me to ski using only one ski at the time. You held my hand when I was unsure, and we had a wonderful afternoon in the sun. We sunbathed on Uncle Jimmy’s ski boat, after being pooped from water skiing, as the boat drifted in the Sound and the small waves flopped against it’s sides. I finally did stand up on the one ski, and yes, I took a few spills in the cold Bainbridge water ! You encouraged me to try, and I did!
Over here in the islands, we send you our prayers and love, our hearts are filled with love for you, and our great memories of wonderful ” cousin times ” together ! We pray that your breathing improves, and when we look up at the full moon this weekend, we pray for you. We share all of our love with you & Andrea, Joyce, Jimmy, Jenny, John, and those who are with you this weedend. I wish I could be there to hold your hand again. love, cousin Monica

  25. Casi Smith says:

Continue to be thankful for your “Gift of Time” together…

  26. Mary says:

I love you and think of you everyday. I wish I could be there to hug you and see that beautiful smile and make you watch “Dancing with the Stars” with me :)
You are my inspiration, you make me smile, and strengthen my faith everyday. I thank God for placing you in Andrea life and all of our lives. You have touched all our lives and have made me a better person. I love you Peter, more than words would ever describe. Sending you a hug

  27. Margie Lelvis says:

I think of you so often and am happy to see that you continue your enthusiasm for life and have great faith, with the knowledge that your path is all part of God’s plan. I am inspired by your optimism, and thank you for the lessons in courage and how to keep a positive outlook and spirit. May God continue to bless you and your family.

    Love, Margie

  28. Jules Marine says:

    Hi Peter,

My wife Wendy asked me about you yesterday, so I wanted to let you know we were both thinking about you. I, too, have been lucky enough to go to the Masters, with my dad, in fact, and as you know it’s truly a magnificent place. I’m glad you got to see it. I watched Bubba win this year too; what a great tournament! The Marines send all their love and warm thoughts, and it’s great to read your blogs. Let’s see how Bubba can do in the US Open! We all send our best wishes.

  29. julie losee stevenson says:

    HI, Peter!
I’ve been following your blog now and again and feel bad I haven’t taken the time to write sooner. I’ve been so inspired by your strength and amazed by your support group! That’s what happens when you are a loving and engaged husband, father, son and friend–you cultivate a big support group that is there when times get tough.
I was describing you to my husband (btw I now have a terrific husband (Rick), Max and Maddy are thriving 20-somethings, and since Nordstrom I’ve had one more boy, Oliver (8) and we adopted Leah (9). But back to you–of course everyone loves your energy and enthusiasm, but I think the biggest impact you had on me was your unwavering support of my ideas. Of course some flopped (times when we would be lucky if 3 people showed up for an early Saturday event) and some showed promise, but all were supported. I realize now there is no way you thought all my ideas were good ones (hee-hee–took a while to realize that). Thank you for creating a safe and encouraging environment for taking risks–some people never get that in their careers.
Jill, Simone and I were reminiscing and decided you were right up there with Gail Cottle for all-time best Nordstrom mentors. You were not quite as lovely and poised as she was but, hey, she never climbed up to the rafters in the BP stockroom and sat on top of thousands of leggings just for a 20 second video clip:)
Wishing you continued strength and priceless moments with your friends and family..

  30. Sue Trimble Johnson says:

    Andrea and Peter,
Both of you have been on my mind so many times this past week and I have kept you in prayer. Your faith, your insight, your love, your perspective, your life have blessed me as I have read your blog. Thank you for sharing your heart for it has touched mine. May your cup runneth over with the knowledge and understanding of His great love for you both!

  31. Dale Sprowl says:

    Hey, Peter,
It was good to visit with you today, catch up on our families and reminisce a bit. Your happy eyes and smile are so positive. Dave and I are happy to have you and Andrea as our friends. Thanks for being a blessing to us.

  32. Julia Smissen says:

    Dear Peter,

I’m saddened to hear of your health and life struggles in the last few years but I am encouraged by the living testimony of your faith in our loving God. While it’s been over twenty years since I left working with you at Nordstrom at South Coast Plaza, I’m reminded of some of the guidance and direction you provded me and many others who lived a part of their life along side you at work – “I’m not looking for perfection, I want excellence!” I’ve carried that message and lesson with me through many difficult situations since my time in your employ. I benefited so immeasurably from your mentorship and guidance in spite of the fact I was only your employee for 10 months.

I recall sitting in your office, discussing a customer’s chronic return issue, when Andrea and Chelsea appeared at the door to your office. Chelsea bounded from her stroller to be embraced and welcomed into your arms and to mesmerize you with her explanation of the precious trinket she held in her hand. I could tell right then and there, you were holding in your arms one of your most precious possesions – your beautiful daughter. I will never forget how you stopped everything to take in that moment, gaze lovingly into Andrea’s eyes and then turn your full attention to Chelsea. That was excellent!

I remember how you taught me to sit next to people, face to face, looking them straight in the eyes, with respect for the person but honest candid language when discussing a problem requiring address and sometimes immediate corection. You always let the employee, manager, customer, internal executive or vendor know the truthful details of the situation and what you needed from them to further the transaction as a business partner. That was excellent!

I recall how gracious you were in my hire situation, since another manager in the region had passed on the position and I knew I was not the first choice. You came to the store where I was working and took me to lunch to discuss the position and extend the offer. On my only performance appraisal from you, you wrote at the very top “I’M SO GLAD (the other manager’s name) PASSED! That was excellent! (By the way, I still have that performance review.)

I remember how you would arrive very, very early in the morning to write personal letters to our customers in response to their customer service form comments. I remember one sentence in particular. “I hope you will give us the opportunity to merit your confidence in the future.” That was excellent! I’m sure our Lord is watching you handle ALS and is nodding his approval “Peter, you have more than merited my confidence, my faithful and trustworthy servant!”

I recall how you did not stand in the way of advancement for many employees in the store. I don’t know that former employees of Nordstrom realize how many times you were called upon to give a thumbs up or down to a promotion and how many times you wholeheartedly gave the thumbs up…even for those who would have to grow into the responsiblity of their new role. You held the authority, and did catapult, so many people onto new chapters in their work careers. I was one of the benefactors of your thumbs up authorization. I wonder how many people realize they had the honor to work with you and it’s because of the time spent with you they succeeded in subsequent roles. The realization is not lost on me! Working with you was really excellent!

I know personal stories of others who left to work for other companies or other stores in another region and who wanted to return. So many times you extended the olive branch and relieved the requestor with a few simple words of assurance, “You’ll always have a place to work in my store. Let me know what you decide you want to do.” That was so incredibily excellent!

I remember how you cared for people on a human level. I remember a new single mom on my crew who appeared to be struggling. You asked if she had a support network in her personal life to see her through a tough time and how we could support her at work. She needed a very different schedule from the norm and you authorized the accommodation. I’m sure it is some of the benevolent actions and decisions you made throughout the course of your life which has brought forth the generosity of spirit from your supportive network of friends and caregivers now. The way you impact the lives of others is really excellent!

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I will do what I can each month to help you financially. I hope others will review my post, recall their own experiences and respond faithfully in kind.

    Julia Smissen

  36. Joanna Ennis says:

    Hi Dear Friends,
Thought I’d jot a note as the day has come to a somewhat quiet place, though a nerf war is currently being waged all around me and I AM NOT KIDDING: Jeff is wielding some sort of semi-automatic nerf rifle and the boys are trying in complete vain to ambush him…but the two littles are in bed, so I count my day done. I would cherish a visit with you both. I am able to sneak away on a Monday, Thursday or a Friday. You just let me know what might work. I send my love and am in constant “breathing prayers” for the joy and peace and hope that only comes from our loving God. xoxo, Joanna

  37. Mark Vail says:

Where have the years gone, my friend? Seems like only yesterday we were waterskiing from Richard’s dock on New Year’s day. Richard has stopped by a couple of times lately and we have talked a bit about the “old days”, and about you of course. Your website is great and Mary and I look at it quite often. You and your family are in our prayers daily. We know the comfort and calm that God can provide in times of great trial, and the peace that can come through seeing things in an eternal perspective. You and Andrea speak of that comfort throughout your website and it is quite inspiring.
I regret that we did not have an opportunity to go golfing or fishing together. I would have liked that. I’ve enjoyed looking at the pictures of you in your waders with a fly rod in your hand. Your perfect smile has never changed (how do you do that? and you probably still don’t have a single cavity!). Mom says to tell you hello (she’s doing well and still in the same house on Sunrise Dr.), as does my brother Greg. He tells some pretty funny stories about you, by the way! I had forgotten we used to bum rides from him to various activities. Probably better to leave those in the past, hm? Yes, I think so…
Take care and know that you are in our thoughts. If it’s OK to call, I’d like to do that, but don’t have your current phone number.

    Mark & Mary Vail

    • Peter H. Devin says:

It was great to hear from you. How are you doing? How’s your health? I would love a phone call but since I can’t speak and email would be great. We can communicate that way. Incase you dont have it…peterhdevin@gmail.com

  38. Frank Childers says:

Andrea and Peter – I so much appreciate and look foward to you sharing your updates and stories. Thank you for that effort. It’s amazing what good hands your in despite your daily challenges. Thinking of you both. God bless.

  39. Steve Hitchcock says:

    Hi Peter,

I see you through the window of facebook. Your posts continue to interest, amaze and impress me. Passing through the decades and watching our children grow I find myself wondering how I will deal with the kinds of things that may arise both good and bad. Your example is an inspiration.

Our community lost a man I admired to ALS this winter. I purchased a business from him a number of years ago not long after we moved to Steamboat. He was also an example to those around him in how he conducted his life. I learned from his strength and focus on the good things around him as I learn from yours.

    Thank you.

Myself, Julie Losee, & Jill Fantazia are such HUGE fans of yours and you are one of the most memorable ones I’ve worked with in my 25 years in retail…work ethic (you got there @ 6-ish am daily!?)…all your words of wisdom… soft on the people, tough on the issue etc etc…

  48. Dear Peter and Drea ~

We’re thinking of you and praying for a beautiful Christmas for you and your family. The pictures and thoughts you have shared with us this past year or so have brought tremendous meaning to our lives and to our family.

    1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

This verse is such a reflection of your family. Thank you for reminding us all of what’s truly important and precious.

Merry Christmas from the Baxter family to the Devin family!

Love, Fred, Jennifer, Joel, and Jeffers

  51. Rick Lohman says:

Peter: What seems like yesterday, but now over 30 years ago, I was a new ATO pledge living on the 3rd deck with Bobby Hall and Karlen Walser; quite the welcome to ATO! I also remember, you too were living on 3rd deck. I can’t quite recall your roomies, but I have vivid memories of your influence on myself, and I’m certain others. I knew at that young age you were a man of character and someone who drew instant respect and credibility from those around you. You worked at Nordstrom’s, which at the time, was quite impressive for this small town farmboy! Your grace and style seemed effortless.

Little did I know that your influence on my life would become more meaningful and powerful some 30 years later. You remain a man of significant character, but have also demonstrated what it means to be a “family man, a “man of faith” and a “Brother”. You exemplify Love and Respect and continue to inspire and influence those around you.

My continued prayer is that the grace of GOD continue to be with you and your family.

    Love & Respect,

  52. Cathy (Campbell) Thomas says:

    Dear Pete,

I am the president of your Singapore prayer club. ;-) I’m Dave, Chris and Jay’s little sister (Andy’s older and wiser one) from BHS (can ya’ dig it? Errr… that’s part of an old basketball cheer!) Please know there’s a growing rally cry from this part of the world for you and yours to find continued inspiration, strength and wellness.

    Kind wishes,

  53. Colleen Keefe says:

    Hello Pete-
I still see the twinkle in your eyes and the wonderful smile that I knew in high school! I’m praying for you and your beautiful family daily.

Thinking back on those high school years the thing that comes to mind when I think of you is Joy, pure and simple. You were an inspiration to others even back in high school. You have always radiated happiness and this shows in the pictures of you and your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Pete.

  54. John Davenport says:

Peter, we will miss you at the Great Guys Luncheon today. I look forward to your son’s reading of “the Poem”. Your poem is always the highlight of the lunch!
    Take care,

  55. Peter and Andrea,

We are praying for you tonight and have asked a bunch of other folks, all across the globe to pray as well.

I told Caleb and Seth that you could use some prayers and Caleb raised his hand like he was in school, “I will pray! But quietly, in my own mind about it…”

Here’s a little Caleb and Seth inspiration for you from a conversation we had in the car.

    Here’s the conversation:
In the car driving home from errands the boys and I paused to enjoy the orange-y, pinkish sunset cast in the sky.

“I think that God only has two eyes, Mom.” Caleb, my non-stop chatty mystic said, “I think one eye is the moon, the other is the sun.”

Seth chimed in as if he’d been thinking on this his whole life, “Yeah, and he only keeps one eye open at a time.”

    So clever…

    Caleb continued,

“Oh! And the earth is his body and everything in it is his hands and feet.”

We were all quiet for a second. Caleb sighed,

“And his smile is the stars.”
I thought it would make you smile. The boys really love you! And so do we…

Love and peace to you tonight, my friends…

    Stacey, Rocky, Caleb and Seth

  56. Hey Peter,
Tonight Helen came over and we rode. We ride every Wednesday, rain or shine. She is such a strong rider and joyful spirit! She is like you in that she has great strength, faith and is joy filled. I told her that I was in touch with Andrea today and was hoping to visit you. Either way, we are both cheering you on, thinking about you, and here for you however we can serve you. I prayed for you last night and again this morning before I got outta bed. Looking forward to seeing you again friend, your smile and the sparkle in you eyes! Get well soon so we can come visit. God bless you and keep you always,
    Your friends Scott & Helen

  57. Mary says:

Miss you and love you both. I think and pray for you both daily, you are both my inspiration. I thank both of you for helping my walk become stronger in God. Watching you endure all you do on a daily basis and the strength and grace on how you handle everything fills my heart. I wish we lived closer so we could see you everyday, but know that my day starts and ends thinking of you both. You are truly amazing.
    Love you both M

  58. Joseph Babakanian says:

    Dearest Mr. Devin,

As it was at Nordstrom some time ago, you will always be. I hope you remember me from those wonderful days at Nordstrom, you probably don’t know how much those days after my accident you played a role in, helping me move forward in my life.
I remember the early days of coming back to work, and the insecurities associated with that change. It was really hard to be myself, whom i no longer seemed to be. But the Nordstrom family, meaning our crew at So. Coast, played such an incredible role in saving my life, and for that I want to thank you Mr. Devin. With tears welled in my eyes of both pain and joy for the road that we have endured to make us the men we are today. I truly would not change a thing. What was once a burden leading me down a road of darkness has become a gift, a gift of knowledge, a gift of humility, of empathy, of love. You will always be in my heart Mr. Devin. 714-235-3606 is my number if you ever wanna reach out. Would love to hang out one day. God Bless brother.

    • Peter H. Devin says:

I absolutely remember you, you are one in a million Joseph. I applaud you for hanging in there and I appreciate you remembering me after all this time. I am not able to speak on the phone any more since I loss by voice. I now speak by typing with my eyes on a computer that speaks for me. Are you on facebook? You can contact me there and leave messages or through this website. I hope that you are doing well in you life.

  59. Cindi Bruner (Wolfrom) says:

Peter: I am so glad to have tracked you down. I was having dinner with Linda Shimazaki and Julie Kuns and they mentioned finding your website. Your faith and perseverance through it all serve as a wonderful lesson to us all. I think about you often and your leadership and inspiration.

  60. Jeff Cunningham says:

Peter and Andrea – I just wanted you to know how much we love you both and how inspired you have made many of us who read this website, come see you both, and how you have both handled this disease in the most gracious and positive way. We know why this is–its your strong faith in our lord, your following of his commands and outright determination from both of you and it is awesome to witness! (A bit of help from Share the Care group as well!!!)
It was fun to watch the UCLA game with you although our Cougs “coug-ed” it in the end, and we look forward to dinner on Halloween and of course the big event in November!!
All our love and prayers–Jeff and Brenda

I think and pray for you each day. Thanks for being an inspiration to me.

  65. Hi friends! Just wanted to say hello to you both. I hope you have been able to spend a little time outside – this weather is fantastic for just being outdoors and standing there! I was reminded how precious and fragile life can be yesterday when a friend of mine had a little boy weighing only 3lbs. He has a long road ahead of him and is totally dependent on God and the hands around him. Peter – you know it is college football season finally! I remember you are a fan of O or OSU – I think. Love to watch a game with you and cheer on your school. Any how, have a blessed day ahead,

  66. Jay Webster says:

Peter, my man. I’ve been meaning for so long to reach out to you, but like most people, remain wrapped up in the daily insanity that is my life. When I received the news from Shively, I was devastated, but true to form, amazingly positive person that you are, you remain courageous and inspiring. Our post Menselect lives placed distance between us and I’m not sure that I can remember the last time I saw you, but I want you to know that I am grateful for the time we spent together. When Jody and I were making the difficult decision to leap from relatively safe corporation, back into the startup juggernaut, having you as part of that team was a key factor in making the move. You’re a rare individual my friend. Time and space prevent me from coming to support you in person, but please know that I’m thinking of you and your family.

    All my love, Peter.

We love you very much~you are an inspiration to us all.

  71. Bill Ukropina says:

I visited Peter last Saturday July 30th. I am not sure if I had seen Peter and Andrea since 1979 when I graduated from WSU. Although Peter could not speak to me, he was able to send me messages with his eyes through the monitor. He was positive throughout my visit. I told him about old times at WSU and heard about his beautiful children and life since WSU from Andrea.

After my visit, I walked out of their house and droveto see my family. When I arrived, I told my wife and 3 sons that I wanted to meet them quietly and tell them something that just happened to me that was perhaps the most inspirational events of my life. I told them I had just visited a person I knew at WSU in the late 70′s. At WSU, he was very well liked and was dating a women that we all thought was gorgeous. After gradaution from WSU, he married the same women and was a successful businessman and has a son and daughter that are doing well. He now has ALS and can only communicate through his eyes looking into a screen. Yet, through all this physical difficulty, he smiled at me nearly the entire time we were together, communicated with me through his eyes and remembered all the mutual friends we knew at WSU. It has been about 52 hours now since I left Peter and Adrea’s home. During the last 52 hours and now, it is hard for me to explain how amazed I am with Peter’s positive attitude, even with his ALS and physical limitations. Any problem or worry I have seems totally insignificant. I am very thankful that I was blessed with spending time with Peter and Andrea. Peter will always be an inspiration to me.

May God Bless Peter, Andrea and their family.

I’ve never met you Peter but am overwhelmed with your spirit and peace. I have known of your journey through Tyndale Publishers and recently met with Andrea at the bookstore. We prayed and I left feeling a part of your family. Congratulations on Chelsea’s engagement. You’ve done well. Thanks for your consistent walk in faith. I will continue to pray.

  82. Friends Andrea & Peter,
It was so good to see you both the other day! For so long I have had the intention but not the follow thru to stop by – so glad it worked out for us. Peter you looked great. You have that smile that warms my heart – truly the Holy Spirit in you. There is a song I’m sure you know Peter – Be my Everything – Christ in me, the hope the glory be my everything. God is in you, and I sure see it! I will be over watching WSU with you in the fall, and plan to bring my friend Melissa over for a little worship if that’s ok with you and Andrea. She sings like angels! Your joy inspires me, and brightens my day. See ya soon – Scott

  83. Darren Harp says:

I don’t think I knew you were an ATO. So am I. Funny. So it looks like I may be in town for a few months and was wondering if you might be up for a visit. I would love to just swing by for a little bit if you are up for it. It would bless my heart to see you and to rejoice in the faith and strength you and Andrea are holding up before us all. I would just love to feel a sense of knowing I was able to tell you how much I appreciate all you have done for me and what you mean to me. It would be great to pray with you and to feel the powerful presence of GOD in your lives. Love ya man and still stnading strong right next to you in faith. GOD is Great……..

  84. Juli Washburn says:

Oh sweet Peter and Andrea…how awesome is our God! I find joy in praying for you both each and every day….and you in turn, with your incredible website and updates, bring me joy as well…knowing that we serve an amazing Savior. I wanted to let you know, that I too, read Jesus Calling. I grab that little book 3 to 4 times a day…it keeps me going during this time of our lives, when John and I are living in different cities, due to our jobs. Although just a hairpin of what you are going thru, it is still a comfort to all of us i know….that we have a Savior who is with us during our trials….and our great Comforter when we cry out to Him. Glad that Johnny and Jeff were there to surprise you…..i’m sure you had alot of laughs. I love you both dearly….Juli

  87. Terri says:

    Hi Peter & Andrea,
Both of you are so cute how you work together through your day to day responsibilities. It was so sweet to be able to have spent a little time with you Monday evening. Wow, God is so amazing how he’s orchistrated everything perfectly in your home to fit Peter’s needs and accessibility . You have amazing friends and family who have come through in perfect time. God knows every single urgency, need and desire of your hearts and it is visibly obvious he answers them quickly for you. Some very nice construction completed to help you in ways to get around your home and backyard. Your home is gorgeous and looking at all of God’s beautiful flowers blooming brings sunshine into your surroundings and my heart. Flowers are beautiful and they make our hearts smile. The smell is so refreshing. I can’t wait to see you this coming Thursday evening to share God’s love together in quiet time. See you soon. Loving thoughts always, hugs God bless you both! Have a sunshine day : D

Sending you Love Peter and Andrea!

Was thinking about you just today, which is generally my cue from Jesus to pray for folks, and I wanted to just check-in and let you know how wonderful I think you both are! I think of your incredible grace and faithfulness, of all of the lessons about our Jesus that you are not only learning but passing on to the rest of us, and most of all about your contribution to our lives – MY life. Peter I love that you are facing each new challenge with your grand smile – trusting the Lord for provision and sustenance along the way. That smile is etched in my head :) . I love you guys and am praying for each of you.

It has been a very long time old boy. Since HS. But I want to send you all my best to you and your family. And I want to send you all the energy you need right now to keep up the good fight.

In just a few hours I’m going to meet all the old boys for beers. Campbell, Moyle, Dunn, Frease, Livingston, etc. Livingston forwarded your website to me. I would appreciate it if you would send me just a little energy to sustain me thru that ordeal. Dunn still plays drinking games. And Livingston would just a soon pee on you leg than leave the table to go to the men’s room. Some things will never change I guess.

I very much enjoyed the pictures of you and your family. It is good to know that you have done very well indeed.

You old BI teammate and pal,

We have not met but I have heard about you through my family. I am Diane Sherlock’s grandson. My family wanted to wish you well. I personally wanted to let you know I will be running for the ALS Hope Foundation on April 29th in Philadelphia. Our prayers are with you and your family.

  92. Ginny and Paul Chissus Sr. says:

    Dear Peter,

We are Sonny’s parents and we’ve not seen you since Jenny and Sonny were married in Fairbanks. Then, we enjoyed visiting with you and loved the camaraderie you shared with your sister. Jenny adores you and you definitely are a VIP in her life. Obviously, you have been a wonderful role model for her.

We’ve been aware of your struggle with ALS and wanted to tell you we admire your positive attitude in the face of adversity. You have responded to a devastating diagnosis with such strength of character we know God is walking through this life with you.

You are a role model for all of us!

May God continue to bless you and your family.

    Paul and Ginny

  94. shelly rockson says:

    Hello Peer& Andrea, Chelsea& Ryan:
Ed just introduced me to your website, or shall I say–we just discovered it. I suspect Aunt Betty had
something to do with that. You, Peter, and entire family have remained in my prayers all along.
Ed and I were just discussing how very touched and impressed we have been by your positivity
and courage and strength. I know, one might say-what choice do I have, but you have chosen–
to remain positive. We are not silly enough to believe that this should come naturally-sometimes we have
to adjust our attitudes accordingly. I know this is where your faith comes in. I know this is where strength must come
from -when our own resources are depleted. We all pray for you here. I would also like to ask my catholic friend,
sherri to put you on her prayer list. I believe there is power from prayer in numbers. Please know when your
strength seems to be abading that god can give you strength beyond your own understanding.-We love you
Peter & Andrea and family. We send our love and will continue to pray-Love, Shelly

  95. Mary says:

Saturday morning, just relaxing after a crazy week with Mark, before heading back to the hospital. Thank you for all your prayers we could feel the peace each time things seemed negative. God is good. We love you both and I was just thinking of you and miss you.

    Hey guys,

just thinking about you both! Love you a ton and excited to see you in the next day or so.

  97. Mary says:

    Peter and Andrea,
thank you for the fun weekend, Sammi and I loved spending time with you, baking cookies, playing nerts, and just hanging out. Special memories, we love you both.
    hugs Mary and Sammi

  98. Emily Bartek says:

    Peter and Andrea,

We’ve never met, but Ryan is a dear friend of mine from studying abroad in London in 2004. We have not seen one another in several years, but we remain a group of friends that loves and cares for each other even from a distance.

I didn’t have to read your website to know that you were facing this enormous challenge with a dignity and strength that is an example to us all. I knew that anyone who had raised a man like Ryan–with his kind and open heart, passion for life, and strong work ethic–must be an admirable force of a person.

While I am deeply sorry that you’re having to endure this struggle together, your blog shares some truly beautiful moments that reflect the depth of love in your family, and the power of a community of friends can have when they rally around someone they care about. I hope that these moments continue to fortify you in the difficult days ahead. They are the evidence that God is with us.

I will continue to keep you and the entire Devin clan in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing you continued strength for the journey, and countless more moments when you feel your heart might burst from the love that’s being shown to you.

    Warm Regards,

  99. Teri sowers says:

    Peter and Andrea,
I have always admired both of you – your love for God and love for people and wonderful spirits about you and how genuine you both are….. I praise God for all the support and love you have been given during this journey…. the most exciting thing is knowing how our God – our Father in Heaven loves us so much and does work our life out to glorify His Name even though we do not always see the complete picture…the amazing thing is you are both called Beloved…. and God holds you in His Hands and the key is to stay pliable – I love the example you both are… and I hear from so many people the endurance you have and the steadfastness you have…. what a huge example for all of us whom have our own journeys….. Thank you both of you…. for the encouragement you give me….. and others….
I am so proud to call you my brother and sister in Christ… the body of Christ Rocks…

I received the ATO Palm magazine and read your bucket list story and the ATO brothers. What a great story. Thanks for sharing that story and I just went online and read your recent updates. I wish you all the best my friend. I just received some news about me in November that I have prostate cancer. I am having surgery March 8th. I read the other story in the ATO Palm about the brother who also found out he had prostate cancer.
I will pray for you and your family and I just wanted to write and say hi and have added you to my prayers.

  101. Mary Meyer (formerly Wooldridge) says:

    Dear Peter,
I talked to your Mom and got your web sight. What an inspiration to all of us! God is good all the time. I can vouch for the way he cared for me over the years. I wish you the best and will be praying for you.
    Love Mary

  102. Peter

Thanks for sharing your life with us. I work with Andrea (via Thomas Nelson Publishers) and wanted to drop you a quick note letting you know that my wife (Lola) and myself are lifting you up in prayer.

Your story is such an inspiration! Stay strong in spirit. Lola had breast cancer a few years ago and we too came to know how sweet God is in times like these. Though the trials are hard, His presence is sweeter. Neither one of us would trade that time now.

We had a friend with a faith statement we choose to cling to with Lola’s trial. During the journey we came to know the real depth and truth within the statement itself “I will be perfectly healed! It may be on this side of Heaven or the other but I will be perfectly healed.”

Kevin knew and we found out not with lip service, as most tend to say. But within the depths of ones heart. God is perfect. He is on Time. He heals perfectly on either side of Heaven… I rested in that with Lola and she climbed up in His lap and found His sweetness to be true and perfect.

While I do not claim to know how God will move in your life I do know one this He will heal you perfectly

    In His Grip

  103. Ed Duane, (Heather's Ed) says:

OK! It took me a while, but by golly I found you! I have so wanted to continue the conversation we began at MaryAnn’s birthday! I am so blest! Not only have I found Heather but all of the wonderful people that she calls family. She alone is such a fantastic experience of love and caring. When she introduced me to “the rest of y’all!” Hey! you want to talk about “icing” on the best cake I’ve ever had? WOW! I finally stumbled onto your site. It seems that I don’t do anything on this machine intentionally.(a seventy year old one celled brain! You Know?) I’ve got a really wonderful story for you. A while back Heather called and asked if I would go look at a table that she’d found in a consignment shop, for her dining room. One like she’d wanted for years. We went ! We looked, at this old black table that was obviously heavy and not well finished. Someone had painted or darkly stained it, at one time or another. The corners of the top were not square and the pegs in the table top were sticking up about 3/16 of an inch, NoWay could you ever set a plate on that table top. But she loved it and it made her smile. So I let her buy it! Like I really had any say in it in the first place. We got it to her house, the top alone weighs 250 pounds. She did not like the finish on it so I reluctantly got out the sander and began to “grind” away at the horrendous “stuff” it was covered with. And! what appeared was a beautiful dark grained hardwood that I didn’t recognize. The joinery was beautiful and probasbly as tight as the day it was made. we began to wonder and I did a little research to discover that it is a “refectory tabel” As the quality of the workmanship became evident we wondered even more. She finally decided to have it appraised and contacted a local appraiser, who came to the house.
When he walked in and saw it he stopped in his tracks and looked it over very well. All Over! He walked to the head of the table, sat down and said, “It’s Spanish Oak, it was built in Spain, in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, It’s current value is eighteen to twenty thousand dollars. And I had questioned her sanity in paying $599 for it! shows you what I know. As I worked on it I began to realize it’s obvious value and quality, I mean, this thing is almost 400 years old and traveled half way around the world in some probably pretty bad conditions and it is as solid as granite. And it couldn’t have come to a more wonderful home. I empathize because I think she feels, basicly about that table, as I feel about her when someone asks, “Are you going to sell it” Why would you look so hard, for so long for something and then just”let it go?” I know that she’d never let that table go. And I’m hanging on with all I’ve got to hang with. I’ve had times when I didn’t recognize it but, I can truly and honestly say, and often do, that whenever I have needed something, and I’m talking needed here, not “wanted”, that need has been provided! Oft times not because of but, in spite of, my own machinations. True story, my friend! But, I’d wager, that’s no surprise to you. I must warn you that now I’ve found you, replying to me is like feeding a stray cat! However I’m smiling!
We both pray you, and yours, God’s peace and love,
    Ed Duane

  105. Anita Cory says:

    Hello Devin family,
A small world connection has brought me to your blog. I learned of your family, and Peter’s ALS diagnosis, through your niece/cousin, Ali Forsyth at WSU. I work as one of the fraternity/sorority life professionals at WSU and know Ali from her role as a sorority president and Greek 101 peer facilitator.

Even more though, my life has also been touched by ALS. My mother, was diagnosed in 2006 at age 60 and went to be with the Lord in 2009. How she lived her post-diagnosis life was an inspiration to so many people and as her faith grew stronger, so did others in her life. From what I see on your blog, you are doing the same:)

Although I don’t know you personally, I wanted to let you know that I am adding your family to my prayers. May God use you as an witness and inspriation to others, and comfort you in your time of challenges and need.

May God bless you and keep you,

Your family and friends have come forward to help and encourage you but I see that you have helped them and given them encouragement from your strength, courage and your FAITH. I have always struggled with my faith, especially when bad things happen to good people especially children. Reading your page on your faith, it just took hold of my heart and shook it. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you.

Hi Peter. You were incredibly missed last night at the Breakfast Club Christmas Party. Even though you couldn’t make it, you were on everyone’s mind and in many many conversations. I hope you could feel the wonderful vibes from it. Pat Jones gave us all a very thoughtful update on things and how we can help. It was so inspiring and humbling to hear how you are choosing JOY to live your life. It is only with your deep relationship with our Lord that that even makes sense or is even possible. Hope your weekend is filled with love, laughter and renewed strength. You will be in my prayers every day.

  123. Jeff Weidman says:

    Dear Peter,

thanks for including me in your life…I really appreciate it. I think about our days together on the OIA board and the challenges we faced there. You were always totally positive about things in those meetings and I used that example of how I wanted to present myself.

I think about you often and will make a point of visiting your website regularly. I will stay in touch with you.

I spend most of my time with big city mountaineers these days as board president, volunteer, and guide. I’m trying to give back something at this point and it feels right.

You look great! Take care and keep the positive attitude that has inspired me.

    My best,

  124. Beth Cochran says:

    Dear Peter:

Thank you for sharing this tough news. Our family sends you love and light as you find your path through these challenging times. I am glad you have a strong sense of faith thru this, if you are open to it you might find “energy healing” therapy can also bring you relief and healing. Ask and references will appear. I have been moonlighting for 5 years now as a junior healer. It can bring peace and light on dark days.

Truly wishing your family peace and togetherness,

    Beth Cochran

  129. Judy Brixey says:

    Peter and Andrea,
It has been many years since we lived in Eastbluff (we’re now in Woodbridge) and came to your house for Bible study – I think Larry may have even taught a few sessions. Howard Lucas gave us your new means of connecting with family and friends. Yoli Brogger first told me about your diagnosis and frankly it broke my heart. How many sermons have we all heard about how God can use our pain and struggles to grow other peoples’ faith, not to mention our own. Selfishly I have usually thought, well that’s fine, but I would just as soon let someone else have that honor. That is me being truly honest. Having admitted that, I know from experience that it is when I am at my lowest and need the Lord the most that He is so faithful and gives me just what I need moment by moment. You are living that each day and from what you share He is right there walking with you. His promises can be depended on, one of my favorites is the short and simple, but profound – I will never leave you nor forsake you. I so appreciate your openness and pray that you will continue to “tell it like it is”. May the Lord keep you both in the palm of His hand.
Much love and prayers from Judy Brixey

  132. Donna Tice says:

    Dear Peter and Andrea

I was directed to your website by my niece Barbara Adair, who works at Mariners Church. I have a very close friend, Sergio DeLuca that was diagnosed with ALS in September of 2005 in his early 40′s…He too has been very healthy and athletic all his life. Leading him to the doctor was weakness in his hand, slurred speech and muscle twitching. Sergio is still with us battling this disease. If you would like to check out his website, it is http://www.sergiodeluca.com. My prayers to you Peter as well as your whole family! That you may feel Jesus so close!

Peter –(this is second note – dont think the first one yesterday made it through)– You are such a positive person and a great guy, fratentity brother, dad and husband. Jeff and Brenda Cunningham

  136. Sandi Dickerson says:

Peter – I am Karen Dort’s sister and Lynn Dort’s sister-in-law. Karen has kept me apprised of this journey you are taking. During one of Lynn’s lengthy surgeries when we were in the hospital half the night, I have never forgotten when you brought Starbucks to us in the middle of the night. How you demonstrated the face of God and His character at that time! During Lynn’s illness, I saw him point to God’s grace and acknowledge that he trusted God’s plan for his life. I see that same faith from you as you post your life’s activites as they unfold. You are choosing to see His grace in what you still can do instead of what you can’t. Please know that I am praying for you and your family. As we know, God is faithful and He does have plans for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11 – Lynn’s favorite verse)

    • Peter H. Devin says:

Thanks so much Sandi… and I remember that night vividly (not the Starbucks) but you, Karen and Lynn at Hoag. You’re note is very kind and both Andrea and me appreciate your prayers… alot!

  137. Howard Lucas says:

“The goal is to grow in character, in Christ likeness.” You and your Family are an example for us all in making life holy and acceptable to God.
Thank you for sharing that you are choosing God’s way and nothing else. “We were made by God for God and until we figure that out…life isn’t going to make sense.”
Thanks again for your example and courage,

    • Peter H. Devin says:

Thanks Howard, so much. But we are just living day by day… giving thanks and being joy-filled – for what was and whats to become. Give our best to Debbie.

  138. Ryan and Kelly Callaghan says:

    Peter and Andrea,
Thank you for this thoughtful use of technology. Julie and i have to be honest; we are sitting at the table crying our eyes out. I think back to you and Drea as newlyweds; letting the farmboy sleep on your couch in your house off of 45th in the U district. It has been inspirational to see how you have always loved and cared for my sister. To see both of you so anchored in faith and a commitment to marriage HAS been noticed by the two of us. And it has helped us to stay and grow as a family. I believe that known as legacy. God Bless you both for that. Love Andrew and Julie.

Oh it was so great to see your video and hear about all the things you CAN do! Your spirit is still all there Peter and how lucky are you to have Andrea there beside you! I can’t imagine what it is like to go through this experience but I do know that we all need to remember you as we get frustrated over all the stupid things that we do and put our lives in perspective because of YOU.
