During our ALS journey over the last 3 years, we have learned it helps to have the attitude to keep living life each day. We try to make the most of the day that we have been given…each day is a gift. It may be a good ALS day where Peter has energy or he may only be up for a few hours. This last week was very intense when he was in bed for 3 days with hospice at the bedside. We really were not sure if he would pull out of the tailspin he was in. Every day with ALS is different and some are more of a challenge than others.
Our son Ryan was turning 30 and we had planned a surprise dinner fiesta for him in the backyard with a few of his closest friends and family. We were going to cancel the event because Peter had just come through some rough days. But on the morning of the planned fiesta, the sun was shining, the backyard looked beautiful with flowers… it was as if the day was announcing itself and saying “I’m here, use me!” It reminded me that we have been given the gift of today; and the gift of our son Ryan, family and friends. So we choose to keep living life and celebrated Ryan’s birthday… with fiesta food, music, family, friends, affirmations, ice cream cake and sombreros. Peter was able to join us only for about 30 minutes, but he created a special memory for our family with his presence. Ryan told us one of the highlights of the party was seeing his Dad in the backyard while we all yelled “surprise”. Peter seems to be feeling stronger now and he has had a few good days. We will see what tomorrow holds, but no matter what we will try hard to keep living life in faith with family and friends.
